I agree. It sucks. We just have the day off. My time off accumulates over time, and more accumulates every year I work there, and i get 2 floating holidays in addition to that. Those are days I can take any time, and are in addition to the days off for holidays.

July 4th is one of those holidays, yes. It doesn't mean I won't get called, even if I'm not on call...but thats a different fight.

Be happy you don't work for the state. Those holiday days are now furlough days. and you CANNOT make up that time by working overtime on other days to still get your 40 a week. The holidays have been full of 32 or even 24 max hour weeks. LAME

I asked to work extra hours the week of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years so that I didn't need to use as much PTO, but was told no. My company is getting people to have less PTO available by forcing us to use it.
