I went to Hobby Lobby to buy some posters. Then realized that posters tacked on the wall is kind of...college. So I'm making frames!
I went to a hardwood store, and tried to get redwood and cherry. Unfortunately they had no redwood...but cherry, and walnut, and a the sales guy sold me on some weird red wood called "African Padouk." All I know at this point is that there are about 10 10' boards in front of me, maybe 2" x 3" of what appears to be poorly cut, red and black. For 10 bucks, I say okay.

4 downloadsDoing some research, I found some Wetco Danish Oil that is supposed to work pretty well on porous woods, wet sanding the oil into the wood. I received it today, so I decided to play. I cut off a three inch chunk, finding it fairly hard to saw. Cutting off the face of most of the sides, I then cut it in half. I sanded one of them.
Here I've put the two pieces side by side for comparison, the side I sanded up on the left, the outside of the board up on the right.

2 downloadsAt this point I quit for the night, as it was almost 10 PM. Tomorrow night I will start the finishing process, so that it can cure while I'm gone over the weekend. The sad thing about Padouk is that it fades over time with UV light to a dark brown, but I think I've found an acrylic-urethane on the internet that will keep the fading to a minimum. If it looks decent when I'm done, it will be the first real finish work I've done, and I'll hang it over the tv.
