yes i know i'm late to the game, just installed window 7 onto my laptop. it was due for a reformat anyway so might as well get it in at the same time.

has anybody been using this? if you have what you think about it?
i'm liking it so far but that's only from my initial impression. so far it's running pretty well even on my not so great laptop.

any opinions on it for those who have tried it?

I think its awesome, much more friendly than OSX. It has a very clean and slick feel to it, and handles multitasking with ease. I'm excited to get it on my Netbook.

I hear that it will be everything Vista was not.

History tells me it will be shit. Like Windows 98 was (so much there was a second edition), like Windows ME was, like XP was at first, like Vista was. I don't have personal experience with the early days of 2000 and NT.

I think it was with 2000 that Microsoft changed the file format and main kernel that runs everything - I used to LOVE Lords of the Realm 2, and was ticked when I couldn't play it with XP, even in "Compatibility Mode." It was the same sort of thing they did in Vista, change the kernel and nothing works.

I could play that game in compatibility mode in XP - you also have to select to only use 256 colors to make it work!  I should see if it still works on Vista sometime.  I loved playing everyone off against themselves while I attacked my closest "ally" for his stuff.

Holy crap it's five frickin bucks - this may well be worth the purchase.

I think I remember us arguing about it at the time, Carl...I could never make it work well. Work, yes, work well not so much.

Yes, but GoG games even work on the 64 bit systems!  And $5!  If only I did not have such a huge backlog of games - but I'm still going through some from last year even!

I'm not doubting the fact that the gog version (I've never heard of the site) works on Vista, they say it does so I'm sure it will. I'm just stating that last I tried to install my version, it failed.

Also, I think I may have lost the disks.

so far i'm liking 7. although i do somewhat wish i still had the quick buttons on the left and shrink the task bar a little more. but i'm not having any problems with it that i didn't have with xp (mostly graphics card kinda sucky on my laptop).

i can install all of my programs onto 7 and i'm not getting any problems. i think i'll go install the full version when it comes out for my laptop. now i'm just wondering if i should go 64 bit on my desktop. install the 64 bit will take quite a bit of work with all the stuff inside it.

Are you running the release candidate? Last time I did something like that was for Windows XP 64 bit, back when there were no 64 bit drivers for anything. I learned the lesson of not installing beta copies of Windows. I'll wait a year after its official release before buying it, I'm getting more and more used to Vista.

What? No, I installed XP 64 bit when it was in beta, back in 2005? There WERE no drivers.

There are "quick buttons" just pin your programs to the taskbar. I plan on buying Ultimate for Maren's Laptop, the Media Center, and my Macbook Pro. And yeah, Win7 does use the same drivers as Vista.

Fact: touchscreens are expensive.
