Sorry, but I did major in that stuff. And I believe in giving credit where credit is due. My apologies for the insult, OJ.

He was grasping at straws to somehow "prove" the UK's relevance. Sorry, the UK hasn't been relevant since, eeeehhh....1947. And I'm being generous.

And honestly, I think it's a shame. The UK used to be cool. Dangerous, fierce, to be trifled with at one's own peril.

And now?

It's like the UK was an adventurer, who did a whole bunch of cool shit, but then got married and now just sits on the couch and drinks warm beer all day long.

However Lougan,

This was never about US vs UK. I know the United States has it's problems, but at least we question our government. Instead, this thread is about the complacency of the subjects of Her Royal Majesty the Queen, and how they blindly and dumbly go along with anything their government says, like lambs to the slaughter. If they ever knew what Freedom meant, they've long since forgotten...traded it for a false sense of security.

much of modern pop music and TV would disagree with you.

the UK still has a large cultural presence. Its not all great and there's plenty generated by the US that is also of equal or greater quality, but you can't just dismiss them as irrelevant.

There's a fast-food joint serving "London Style" fish and chips (except they call them fries instead of chips, and they don't come in newspaper, and it's the wrong batter, and practically everything else).

Hey, Henreh?

Check.

Yeah I'm going stand up for my country still, just not the queen or government for the most part. And as for the comment on following our government without question? That is just a stupid remark, as you'd know, government works on a majority vote, not for each individual persons views. And just look at bush' reign of terror. He was the cause of far more pointless and pathetic things. And before you run in and say we followed you, yes we did, yes it was stupid but we were kinda hoping it was for a good reason, and it turned out we were let down. And most of the country disagreed with it.

You don't know very much about our country, and you're pretty ignorant. We are named Great Britain for a reason. We were the most powerful empire the world has ever seen. We might be going through some hard times at the moment, but look at your own history. You have more to thank us for than you realise. Just as we have with other cultures and countries. America is not the be all and end all of the world cap.

Tommi, I appreciate what you're trying to do but you haven't really said anything at all.

I know plenty about great Britain. I know you can't have a penknife in your pocket without being arrested for having a "concealed weapon". And while you may be a representative republic, you're hardly what I would call independent thinkers.

Besides, nobody least of all me is claiming that the UK *wasn't* great. You're right. It *was* the greatest empire the world has ever seen, or is likely to ever see.

Which is what makes this all so very very sad.

You're right.

And to sum up the score, for the proper use of the terms "you're" and "your", we have:

CaptainHenreh: at least 1

Lougan: -1000 (perhaps even less)

Oh, right...carry on.

Tommi, you started out ok, but you went all jingo at the end.

You were one of the greatest empires the world had seen, ruling by economic slavery and cultural destruction, owing much to your rule the mere benefits of immunity to the diseases you took with you as much as any ability to hold rule over anyone. you left a swath of desolation and ruined peoples across the globe, basically running away from places that became too much trouble to keep oppressed. Anytime you came up against an enemy with equal technology and sophistication, you were sent packing.

There's plenty about the UK to be proud of, and plenty about the US to dislike

But again, that's not what this is about. There's plenty of cultural heritage for Britons to be proud of. Plenty of cultural heritage for the Portuguese to be proud of too, but that ain't what we're discussing here.

We're discussing the sad state of fear that Britons have bred for themselves, and the near total lack of relevance to the 21st century.

Hell, the music point is the best one I've heard. The rest has just been either a bunch of "NUH-UH!" or "Well, back in the day we..." bullshit.

I don't know how you qualify "total lack of relevance" but you're welcome to invent any argument to support it I guess.

Eh. It just seems that every time I look at the newspaper, Britons are trading away their civil rights for the "common good." But really this has gotten blown out of proportion, as I really just wanted to push OJ into thinking for itself for once.

I don't want to get into a slagging off match here, I for one want to leave the country as soon as I am fully qualified (hopefully to the land of largo and eva). But that is because I disagree with how our government works. Like I said earlier, I have no good feelings towards them or the monarchy. But as a country we will never be forgotten, and to me that's something to be damned proud of. Even if some parts of that reasoning are shady and wrong, it shaped the world that we live in today. Just like America.

Eh, that's just because you don't know me. I watch every episode of Top Gear the minute it hits the web, and I've got a Daytona 675 as my wallpaper at work. What I really can't stand, however, is the "Nanny Stateism" that the UK is rife with. And the reason it aggrivates me so much is because the UK used to be so cool and because there are many things I like that come out of the UK, but I feel I can't support because I despise what the government has done and what the people of the UK have allowed to happen.

well go somewhere else then?

I agree with what you've said in that last post completly Capt. The UK is going to shit right now, worse than ever, and until we get rid of our current leader, nothing even remotely good will happen. However it seems the way of the brit to crave disappointment, so we'll probably keep him in power for a good length of time yet. Hence why I want out. And you're probably right, it could be because I don't know you that I thought you were anti-britain. But at the end of the day what does it matter. We all know the UK needs to pick its self up.
