Ok, so I'm going to the Aveda Institute, and as soon as i graduate sometime next fall, I want to go to one of the salons they have in London, but i'm worried because I've never been there and I want to know what i'm getting myself into.

I know the cost of living is higher there, but I would like to know things from someone who actually lives there, rather than a company website or someone who has just visited.

ok, so questions.

1. What is the approx. price range for apartments?
2. How is the public transportation for London?
3. Any other tidbits of advice you can offer.

:]

As I don't live in London I can't give the best advice but...

1) London is the most expensive city in the UK, in which to live. The lowest grade flat in Bristol is around 150K to buy. (If you're renting than it depends on the flat and landlord.) One in London will be 2 to 3 times more expensive.

2) It's the best in the UK. (Mainly because first don't own it.) It will only get better under Boris.

3) Don't think we're from the 1700's. That's what your stereotypes say. And not all Londoners are Cockney.

Oi, I'll get you locked in the tower, Or sent to Australia with the other convicts. It's only by those convicts that your country was discovered in the first place! Don't poke fun!

Actually we were discovered by Abel Tasman a dutchman, before we were explored mostly by Captain James Cook of none other than merry old engrand.

What

Quite right to say Australia's full of criminals though.

i know everything is ore expensive, but does that mean that wages are high as well?
would it be cheaper to get an apatment in london and walk/bus/train to work, or live right outside of london and drive to work?

There are Aveda salons at alot of places, and i don't even know where to begin to choose. Glasgow, West Sussex, Cheshire, Devon, Sheffield, etc.

can you recommend a good town/spot to start looking?

The wages will tend to be higher in London, but the cost of living is quite high here anyway. You won't have much spare money unless you win the lottery or something.

Looking at those two choices, you can mix. One of my Aunt and Uncle's lives in Chessington (Surrey). The overground line isn't far and it goes to Waterloo. You don't have to live in greater London to benefit from it's public transport.

Wages are pretty high in London, theres a lot of work there as well. There are so many New Zealanders (including half my mates), Auzis, Canadians and Saffas working over there.

A couple of people I know work up in Edinborough in Scotland who love it a recommend it over London.

I wouldn't be embarrased about ones country havn't old established traditions and customs, you can't replace them. Gives the place character.

One thing that you should note is that you may need a national insurance number to work over there, unless you work under the table. Its not a difficult thing to get, but it take a long time to get an apointment to get one, I understand its best to set up an appointment well before you leave. The waiting time was three months whilst I was in Engrand.

You should also set up a bank account in advance with a british bank. Brittish banks are absolutely useless to deal with in comparison with any normal country and even setting up and account can be a pain. Avoid HSBC.

just wondering, did you check craigslist for apartments or roommates? it might give you more of an idea the cost. Of course, you'll have to research the areas that you'd want to live, but I can't imagine that'd be too tough.

I'd also check out Gum Tree which has alot of useful stuff like jobs and flats in London.
