I freely admit it. I had Projectitis. Always some broke POS I paid a grand or two for, spending the rest of my cash trying to make it more powerful, better handling, faster. I figured it was terminal, and then resigned myself to this fate. Moving from busted pile to busted pile, always scratching at the very limit of my meager budget to have something that moved like it meant it.

But there was a light at the end of the tunnel. A cure for Projectitis. It's simple, and I'll share the secret with you:

Buy a car that isn't a piece of shit.

Yeah, I didn't think it was that easy either. But I looked at my budget, and went and bought the fastest thing I could afford:
IPB Image
And it *is* fast.
IPB Image

The formula is pretty simple. You take a ranted-and-raved about chassis, drop it, stiffen it, and then throw a Ward's Ten Best motor:
IPB Image
Direct Gasoline Injection, 9.5:1 Compression, and a smallish turbo reaching a 15.6 psi max (although people have recorded spikes into the 19's).
IPB Image
That translates into 268hp and 280lb-feet of pavement shredding torque. Have I mentioned I have an enormous hard-on for this car?

You put that torque to the ground through six forward gears and a torsen limited slip differential. I probably would not have bought the thing had it been Dodge Neon-esque and not had six speed and LSD. But you combine the six speed, the direct injection engine, and a torsen LSD...and it was a package I couldn't turn down.

My favorite bit is the subtlety of the car. At first glance, it's not really that different from a regular, mundane, run of the mill Mazda 3. It's the little things that make the difference:
Larger rear spoiler, different rear valence:
IPB Image
Unique foglights, front valence:
IPB Image
And you've already seen the pretty subtle "Mazdaspeed".
You get a bling oil cap:
IPB Image
And cool little chrome accents on the doorsills:
IPB Image
You also get some really comfortable, stylish, supportive seats, but I didn't include pictures of those cuz I'm laaaaaazy. If you're made of twigs with skin wrapped over 'em, you might slide around a little, but if you're my size, they're perfect.

My only beef is with the shifter. See, this is the same trans as the Speed 6, including the same shifter. It might be my imagination, but it seems a little better in the 3, but it still isn't the rifle-bolt shifter I'd really love. But with 0-60 in under 6 seconds, I won't complain.

IPB Image

I mean, would you?

I just wanted to show it off a little. Don't misunderstand, it's not perfect. The electronic throttle can be a bit nannyish (it's the main way the Traction Control works) the shifter can be a little vague and notchy, and I don't like the fact that it's got 18" wheels. 17" would be much more better. But on the 2-3 shift, when the turbo comes on full, you pretty much forget all that...you also forget about having any shit projects, too. I mean it's a nice, new, warrantied car that's probably about as fast as my old Supra. That is, fast enough.

This was the first turbocharged gasoline vehicle to get an SU-LEV rating in Japan. (75% Lower than 2005 Standards). As far as fuel economy goes...obviously I have to have 93 Octane, but I've been getting about...23.5 miles per gallon. Now, my commute lasts only about 7 minutes and includes NO highway speeds, quite possibly the worst combo for good fuel economy. On the highway (like going to my parents) that number gets a little closer to 29. Meets fuel economy standards until 2010.

I mean, It's not great by any means. But it's not bad.

I'm not going to pretend that it'll make the hippies happy but it is, after all, a hybrid: It burns gasoline and rubber.

Who cares about emissions. It's PRETTY. =) But I read that the Mazda 3 was rated the unsafest car in 2006. Better put in a roll cage.

Where'd you read that? It's positively preposterous. "Unsafest car 2006". Whatever. I certainly am not going to roll the thing.

Besides, I'm pretty sure the next purchase will be a motorcycle, so "Unsafe Car" is really sort of relative.

An SV650S, it's not plastic covered, but it does have a half fairing.

The only thing I could find about the Mazda3 on MotorTrend.com is how much they loved it, but whatever.

And as far as "crotch rocket" goes, would you guys prefer something like this:

No thanks, I want something that actually can, you know, turn.

Besides, here's what the "non-S" looks like:

Same bike, without the half fender. Hardly crotch rocket.

you can have a naked bike that isn't a giant cruzer.

Jason bought at Yamaha Radian over the winter and I can't wait 'til he lets me ride it (he's so fucking posessive tongue.gif )

Kerri, what is your obsession with the length of my willy? It's .3L displacement. Length doesn't really give you a good sense of the size of a dick, now does it? Furthermore, the Mazda 3 has been the same damn automobile since 2004 and in 2006 (goddamnit) it was the second best selling car in Canada. Kind of strange for an unsafe car, wouldn't you agree? I'm not trying to fight with you, I was merely struck curious by your statement.

And Adina, what's the difference? The SV650S is just a naked SV650 with a little half fairing for aerodynamics. I'm confused about why you "Yuck" "crotch rockets" but like the radian, when they're so similar. the SV has 50cc's more displacement and 10 more horsepower. Whoopdie do. I actually prefer the look of a "street fighter" naked bike, but the SV is so cheap I can hardly turn it down.

I'm a fan of the radian because its right here and the possibility of it becoming mine is high. I don't like the look of the plastic covered bikes. I would actually probably like a smaller cruiser, not one of those big boats that you posted. The nekkid version of the bike you posted is definitely a better looking bike,

but what the fuck do i know.

Yeah, all I'm saying is that the bikes are identical, I'm probably going to ditch the half-fairing and go naked so when I go to sell the thing eventually it'll be in good shape.
