unfortunately, I've never read Mother Night, though I do love Vonnegut...and its been forever since i had to read SL, and I hated it then
i can only surmise that she/he's looking for a discussion of the outward symbolism of 'evil' and 'sin' on otherwise sympathetic and "good" characters, vs the overly-pious and judgemental hypocrites that condemn them.

i would interpret as perception, like how you perceive something and then how it really is

so yea..for my summer reading assignment, we had to read Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut, and The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne. I have to write an essay about the nature of appearance and reality.
One..could someone explain that in simplier terms?
Two..any ideas on what to write about in the essay or a good way to start off the intro?
help would be greatlyy appreciated.
thanks loves.
1. Appearance, reality. How are they similar, how are they different? The A stood for adulterer as I recall, does that one act make that woman a whore, as it appears to be, or was it just one solitary act of passion? If a politician says one thing but does another, what implications can you draw from that?
2. Nope, 'cause I haven't read either of those.

I reserve the right to say "Don't be a prick," yet be one myself.

This is a topic everyone should spend some time considering.
The way things appear may not be as they seem. For example, a person may be leaning up against a building with a pen in their mouth. A person from afar may think they are smoking a cigarette. Which is real? The reality of a person who is holding a pen is real. However, the person who perceives that they are smoking a cigarette may also feel they understand the reality of the matter.
appearance and reality is about perceptions, realities, and how to manipulate the two for the common good.

I doubt K.T. needs help with her essay from two and a half months ago.
