It's never overkill to max out your memory capacity, but this is assuming your processor is 32 bit. Also assumes that your OS doesn't have any software extensions to provide 64-bit memory addressing on 32-bit systems. After all, if you've maxed it out, you won't have to pay for any more upgrades
All memory will be used, your work will expand to fill the memory you have. Don't worry too much about it. As for Maxtor, my external 300 (false) GB HD is still going strong, so I'm gonna have to say I like their products completely based on the one Maxtor product I have, haha.

ive decided to go with 2x1gig sticks at the mo, its nearly twice the recommendid but allows me to upgrade more later. i just dont want to spend £100 on something im not going to use. im going to do the same with the harddrive as well. ive always gone with maxtor and they seem pretty damm good.
also has anyone got any oppinoins on the Graphics card? you recon it will be able to play the latest game with maxed out optoins?

If you want more powerful graphics cards, I think you're going to have to wait until nVidia/ATI come out with new cards, because 7800 is about the best. Those things are pricey though.
Maxtors have a history of dieing. I suggest Western Digital or Seagate, I've never had a problem with any of them, but WD and Seagate have 3-5 year warranties.
